A fairer minefield

What is no-guess Minesweeper?

In an ordinary game, you can reach a position where two covered squares are equally likely to contain a mine. A random choice decides the result. No-guess Minesweeper removes that frustration.

Sometimes written as Minesweeper no guess, the rule is simple: after your first click, each board is tested by a logical solver before play begins. The solver uses revealed numbers, confirmed mines, and overlapping clue patterns. A board is accepted only when those deductions can clear every safe square.

Three simple rules

How to play Minesweeper

  1. Reveal a square. A number tells you how many mines touch it, including diagonally.
  2. Read the clues. Combine nearby numbers to work out which covered squares are safe.
  3. Clear every safe square. Flagging is optional—use it to record what you have already proved.

Minesweeper difficulty levels

All three boards use the traditional Minesweeper sizes. Each one is generated, tested and rebuilt until the whole board can be cleared by logic alone, so a higher difficulty means harder deductions rather than more luck.

Classic board sizes available in this online Minesweeper
Level Board Mines Mine density Typical clear time
Beginner 9 × 9 10 12.3% Under a minute
Intermediate 16 × 16 40 15.6% Two to five minutes
Expert 30 × 16 99 20.6% Ten minutes or more

Minesweeper strategy for no-guess boards

Every board here has a logical path, so the same habits that make you faster also make you safer on expert.

  1. Open with the first click. The first square and its neighbours are always clear, so the game starts with real information instead of a coin flip.
  2. Count before you click. When a number touches exactly that many covered squares, all of them are mines. When its mines are already accounted for, its other covered neighbours are safe.
  3. Read the edges. Most deductions live where numbers meet a wall or a cleared area. Patterns such as 1–2–1 and 1–2–2–1 pin mines down without a guess.
  4. Expand from cleared ground. Revealing next to squares you already understand creates new constraints, and the rest of the board usually opens up from there.
  5. Slow down at the end. The last few covered squares are where careless clicks end most games.

Quick answers

Minesweeper FAQ

Is this Minesweeper game free?

Yes. The full game is free to play in your browser, with no account or download required.

Is the first click always safe?

Yes. Your first square and all immediately adjacent squares are guaranteed to be clear, giving every game a useful opening.

How do I flag a mine?

Turn on the Flag button in the game toolbar and clicks mark squares instead of opening them: click once to add a flag, click the same square again to remove it, then switch the button off to reveal squares again. Right-click, Ctrl+click, a two-finger tap or a long press on touch also toggle a flag directly. Flagging is a memory aid only: you win by revealing every safe square, and the counter shows how many mines are still unmarked.

How do I know when I have finished?

The board is checked automatically after every click, and the result box appears the moment the last safe square is revealed, so no button is needed to win. If you want to check sooner, press the Check button: it tells you how many safe squares are still covered and how many mines you have flagged, and after a win or a loss it brings the result box back.

What difficulty should I choose?

Beginner uses a 9 × 9 board with 10 mines. Intermediate uses 16 × 16 with 40 mines. Expert uses 30 × 16 with 99 mines—the traditional standard sizes.

What does no-guess mean?

It means the board has a complete path based on visible clues. You may need advanced deductions, but you never have to make a purely random choice.
